Chapter One

Songbird

Betty sings second at the Velvet and says sorry to doors. Ruby, the star, is trying to teach her one word.

Marsh, smiling. "Ruby got mouthy. Ruby said no to the wrong man."
A silent film title card: No, struck through in red. Yes, Mr. Marsh, sir!
Ruby Lark on stage, arms open, rays behind her. Tonight, Ruby Lark, no cover.
A silent film title card: It's one letter more than "oh."
Grey lips, a red lipstick touching them. "Some day I'll be brave enough."
A silent film title card: Run away, struck through in red. The hatpin.
Earl the super, holding his keys. "With his keys! Said he was checking the radiator."
A silent film title card: Poker. Blackjack. Ask nicely.
A curtained doorway at the Velvet. "Don't run. Running tells 'em where you're going. Walk like you're late for somewhere better."
A silent film title card: I'm fine, Tommy. Go back to bed. No. I'm not.
The man with the carnation in a cab, smiling. "Drive, pal. The lady and I are old friends."
A silent film title card: Yes, we're good friends, struck through in red. No, mister, we're not friends!
Betty's own hands in first person: one on a candlestick telephone, the other lifting its earpiece.

Turn out the lights. Hold your breath. Put a hatpin in the first man who finds you. She'll say sorry.

Not everything is a fight: paint your lips at the mirror, and play real hold'em and blackjack at the Velvet's tables.
